Soccer Goal Safety: Protecting Players On and Off the Field

Soccer goals are essential to the game, but when they’re not properly secured, or maintained they can pose a few safety risks. Over the years, improperly anchored and damaged soccer goals have caused preventable injuries, especially among younger players.

  • An estimated 120 to 200 injuries involving falling or unstable goals are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year.

  • Most goal tip‑over injuries are children playing or climbing on the goal when it falls, making it all the more important to make sure goals are properly secured.

Why Securing Soccer Goals Matter

Proper anchoring is crucial for safety. All goals, no matter what soccer goal size you have, must be securely anchored to prevent tipping or movement during play. While soccer goals meet ASTM standard F2950-14, FIFA, and NCAA/NFSHSA rules, anchoring is key for player safety. It's advised to hold yearly inspections for the goals. Here's what to look for and how to address the following common issues:

    • Disconnected frames
    • Rusted braces
    • Loose or broken bolts that do not tighten
    • Broken anchors or holes in Sandbags
    • Holes in netting

Most of the time, a broken part doesn’t mean you need to replace the entire soccer goal. Replacing individual components such as bases, backstays, wheels, screws, or bolts can restore stability and extend the life of your goal for several more seasons. Giving you time to start budgeting for a new goal.

However, when structural components are compromised or repairs no longer ensure proper safety and stability, it’s time to consider investing in a new goal. Proactively replacing unsafe equipment is far less costly than dealing with injuries, liability issues, or potential legal claims.

At Atlantic Soccer Company, we believe safety is non-negotiable. Properly sized, well-anchored goals don’t just protect players, they create a better environment for learning, development, and enjoyment of the game.
